Misty Brooks Success Story

Customer Story

Misty had been through diet changes, prescriptions and surgery after surgery, and watched her citrate numbers keep falling anyway. Then she started KSPtabs and repeated her 24-hour urine test three months later. This is her story, in her own words.

In Her Own Words

Dr. Trotter has been able to finally make a breakthrough in my care with the KSP tablets. We have been trying for years to work with diet modifications and conventional prescriptions to no avail. Surgery after surgery has been our only option while watching my citrate numbers continue to decline. Needless to say, this was disheartening.

I started using the tablets in May 2017. Not only do the tablets taste great, I found myself craving the taste after a week or so of continuous use. The containers that hold the tablets also slip into my purse easily, so that there are no constraints with portability.

Yet, I had no idea if there was an improvement in my citrate levels until we repeated the tests in August. I was so elated when the results came back that I burst into tears. My numbers were the best they have ever been! Imagine, all it takes to maintain my kidney's well-being is to drink a tasty carbonated beverage (that can be mixed with a variety of liquids). My hope is that other people with my condition are able to hear about this option.

Misty Brooks

Misty's numbers moved because she measured them. If you're a stone former and you've never had a 24-hour urine collection, that's the first step. Here's how it works, and a cheaper way to keep an eye on things between tests.

Testing

The 24-hour urine collection

If you suffer from kidney stones, ask your urologist for a 24-hour urine collection. It takes a full look at what's in your urine and how much you produce in a day, which is how your doctor finds the underlying reason you form stones.

You'll be given a container and collect every drop for 24 hours. Drink your normal amount, no extra water and nothing cut out, so the results show the conditions that led to your stone and give your doctor a baseline to compare against once a plan is in place. Pick an ordinary day: not a weekend, not a party, not a holiday. Any of those can skew the numbers. When you're done you record the total output, take a small sample, and send it to the lab.

The bottom line

1Collect everything for 24 hours.

2Change nothing about how you eat or drink.

3Pick a normal day.

The test measures sodium, calcium, potassium, citrate and uric acid, but one of the first things your doctor looks at is pH, how acidic your urine is. Lower numbers are more acidic, higher numbers more alkaline, and most stone patients sit on the acidic side. A more neutral pH, closer to 7, is friendlier ground. KSPtabs contains citrate, magnesium and B6, which help maintain healthy urine parameters.

Between Tests

The at-home urine test

At-home test strips are inexpensive and give you a quick read on urine pH plus a few other parameters. They're not a replacement for the 24-hour collection, which measures citrate and volume the strips can't, but they're a useful way to see whether a diet change or a new routine is moving your pH in the right direction between lab tests. Any pharmacy sells them; look for strips that test several parameters, not just pH, so you get more from each dip.

Two rules for useful results: test over several days rather than once, and test at the same time each day. Your first urine of the morning reads differently from urine later in the day after you've been hydrating.

  1. Take one strip out and close the container right away. Moisture and air ruin the rest.
  2. Fill a small clean cup with enough urine to cover the strip.
  3. Dip the strip, then tap it against the side of the cup to shake off the excess. The pads start changing color immediately.
  4. Within the first 60 seconds, match the pad colors to the chart on the bottle.
  5. If you're tracking over several days, write down the result and take a photo for your records.

Where KSPtabs Fits

The routine that showed up on Misty's test.

KSPtabs was developed by a board-certified urologist for patients exactly like Misty: people who'd done everything they were told and were still forming stones because the plan was too hard to keep. Drop one tablet in 16 ounces of water, two to three a day, and your hydration comes with citrate to support a healthy urine pH, plus magnesium and B6 to help keep oxalate in check. Then repeat your 24-hour test and let the numbers tell you whether it's working. Kent's story is what that looks like ten years on.

  • ✓Drop one tablet in 16 ounces of water, let it fizz, drink
  • ✓Two to three a day, or whatever your urologist recommends
  • ✓33% increase in urinary citrate in a small clinical study*

*Median urinary citrate increased 33% during KSPtabs use. Small study in 10 healthy adults with no history of kidney stones; the study evaluated urine chemistry and did not assess kidney stone recurrence. Journal of Urology, 2021. Common Questions

Testing your urine FAQ

Is an at-home pH strip enough, or do I need the 24-hour test?

You need the 24-hour test at least once. Strips only read pH and a few basics; they can't measure citrate, oxalate or your total urine volume, and those are usually what's driving stones. Use strips to keep an eye on pH between lab tests, not instead of them.

What urine pH should I aim for?

It depends on your stone type, so ask your urologist for your target. For most calcium oxalate and uric acid stone formers, a pH in the neutral range, around 6.5 to 7, is friendlier than the acidic range most stone patients start in. Struvite stones are the exception and form in alkaline urine.

How long after starting KSPtabs should I retest?

Misty retested about three months in, which is a common interval. Your urologist may want it sooner or later depending on how far off your first numbers were. What matters is that the follow-up happens; it's the only way to know the plan is working.
