KSPtabs delivers 15 mEq of total alkali per tablet: 5 mEq potassium citrate, 5 mEq magnesium citrate, and 5 mEq sodium bicarbonate. Urocit-K is prescription potassium citrate, typically dosed at 15 to 20 mEq per dose. The key difference is format: KSPtabs is effervescent, dissolves in water, and builds hydration directly into each dose. No prescription is required, and the cost can be as little as $1.35 a day. Patients who found Urocit-K tablets difficult to swallow or remember often find the effervescent format easier to stick with.
Yes. A peer-reviewed randomized crossover study published in Urology (the Gold Journal, 2022) showed KSPtabs raised median urinary citrate by 33% (597 → 797 mg/day, p=0.037) and improved urine pH by +0.40. An independent lab analysis confirmed alkalinizing agent content of ~20 mEq per tablet. Real-world practice data from 35 patients showed a +128% increase in urinary citrate. The standard use is 1 tablet dissolved in 16 oz of water, 2–3 times daily or as recommended by the clinician. Taking with meals can reduce GI side effects and space the alkalizing load throughout the day. Each dissolved tablet also contributes to daily fluid intake, supporting the >2.5 L/day urine volume target.
Standard potassium citrate precautions apply: use caution in patients with renal insufficiency (eGFR <30), hyperkalemia, or those on potassium-sparing diuretics or ACE inhibitors. As with any citrate supplement, urine pH should be monitored to avoid over-alkalinization (>7.2), which can increase calcium phosphate stone risk.
